Ion Irimescu
Sculptor

Born: 27 February 1903, in Preotesti, Suceava County

1928 - Obtains his graduation diploma of the Fine Arts School from Bucharest. Student of Dimitrie Paciurea, about him he later declared: „I made an idol from my professor, the great and also the modest“… who could have been „as great as Rodin, if his fate were otherwise established“

1930 - Scholarship for the Romanian School from Fontenay – aux – Rosse, where he worked together with Joseph Bernard

Artistic Career

• 1929 - Double artistic debut at the Official Saloon and French Artists’ Saloon

• Returned to the country, started exhibiting in most of the Official Saloons and Municipal and National Exhibitions
• Sent works for major Romanian manifestations abroad: the 1942 Venice Biennial, Bern and Helsinki 1943, London 1966, Amman 1980
• Sculptures placed in open-air can be admired in Craiova, Lupeni, Bucharest and Iasi
• Two retrospectives: 1976 in the capital and in Moscow, and at the Art Museum in Bucharest
• Develops an intense professorial activity in the high schools from Falticeni, Pascani, and Bucharest, becoming Sculpture Professor with all the three Art Academies in the country (Iasi, Cluj and Bucharest)

• Monument Mihail Sadoveanu, Fălticeni
• Monumental Bust of the Great Romanian Diplomat Nicolae Titulescu, former president of the League of Nations, located in Bucharest
• Famous Portraits of Ion Jalea,, Corneliu Baba, G. Oprescu, D. Ghiaţă, T. Arghezi, Jules Cazaban, Dinu Lipatti, Ion Agârbiceanu, Octav Băncilă, Zeno Vancea
• Drawings: Man's Study, Burden, Singing Maiden, Esquisse, Sad Song etc
• In 1975 he donated an impressive number of sculptures and drawings to the Romanian State, allowing the foundation of a Memorial Museum “Ion Irimescu” in this town, Falticeni
