Born on August 23, 1942 in Holod, Bihor County, the eldest of the four
brothers.
Married to Cornelia-Stela Pop, Professor. Two children, Sorin-Ioan (b. 1966) and Stelian-Mihai (b.1974), both specialists in electronics
Education
- 1960 - baccalaureate at "Gheorghe Baritiu" High School,
Cluj-Napoca
- 1965 - Graduate of the Faculty of Philology, “Babes-Bolyai” University,
Cluj-Napoca, Department for French and Romanian
- 1968 - Post-graduate course for international relations at the Law Faculty, Bucharest University
- 1970-1971 - Courses at Ecole Nationale d’Administration (ENA), Paris
- 1974-1975 - Linguistic courses at Institute of Social Studies, Hague (1974) and City University of Amsterdam (1975)
Professional Career
- 1965-1966 - Professor at the Pedagogic High School in Arad
- 1973 - Started the diplomatic career in Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- 1973-1979 - cultural and press attaché at the Romanian Embassy in Netherlands
- 1980-1989 - back to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, worked with the Directorate for International Organizations (Disarmament Service), Western Europe Directorate and Press and Culture Directorate
- 1989 - deputy director of the Romanian Foreign Minister's Office
- 1990-1994 - first deputy of the Romania's Ambassador to Paris
- 1994-1995 - director in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the relations with NATO, WEU and Council of Europe. General Director for Europe and Northern America
- 1995-2000 - ambassador, permanent representative to the Council of Europe
- 1996-2000 - raportteur of Ministers' Delegates Committee for Council of Europe Intergovernmental Program of Activities
- March 2000 - appointed, by Presidential Decree, to the diplomatic rank of ambassador
